FAQs

Do you allow pets?

Yes we do, you’re always welcome to bring your furry friend with you during your kayak rental! However, we do ask that your furry friend be leashed when on land and that you clean up after them.

What is the minimum age to rent a kayak?

There is no minimum age to rent a kayak however, all minors will need to have a parent/guardian sign a waiver on their behalf and accompany them for the full duration of the rental.

What do we need to bring for our rental/what's included in the price?

The kayak rental fee includes all the necessary equipment so there is no equipment you are required to bring however, if you have your own paddle or life jacket, you are welcome to use it. As for clothing, wear whatever you are most comfortable in that you don't mind getting wet. Also, flip flops or water shoes are recommended but not required.

What do we do once we have arrived?

When you arrive, all persons in your party who are 18 or older will need to come inside the shop and complete our waiver form (parent/guardians will sign for any minors in the party). Also, one person in your party will need to leave behind their drivers license while you are on the water. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your reservation to allow time for the waiver process.

What is your cancellation/rescheduling policy?

There is no cancellation/rescheduling policies for non-guided kayak rentals. Just call the location your reservation was created for if you need to cancel or reschedule and we will be happy to help.

Do I need prior kayaking experience?

Not at all! Just mention to a BHO Crew Member that it is your first time and we'd be happy to help. If you would like a BHO Guided Tour or a BHO Guided Paddle Lesson, please give us a call and we will be happy to help coordinate. The fee for a BHO Guide is $65/per hour.

What's the most common length of time for a rental?

Generally speaking, the most common length of time for a rental is 2 hours as it allows you to have plenty of time to explore while not being out for too long.

What's the best time to rent a kayak?

This depends greatly on the day you wish to rent. We recommend you time your kayak rental around having an outgoing tide when you begin your rental and an incoming tide when you return that way the tide is always in your favor. You can check the tides for Old Lyme here or Westbrook here.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Absolutely, although it is not required! If you have a preferred PFD or paddle, you are more than welcome to use it instead of the provided equipment. If you would like to use your own kayak without the purchase of a kayak rental however, we will charge a $20 parking fee per car.

Can we take equipment off-site?

Absolutely! We charge $25/night/equipment in addition to the standard kayak rental fee for off-site overnight rentals (only applicable for rentals of 8 hours or more). If you would like us to deliver the equipment and you are located in East Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, or Clinton, we will also charge a $50 delivery fee.
