Old Town Parts Kit: Your Best Friend in a Bad Situation

It happens. No matter the brand of boat or kayak, no matter the skill level of the operator or how many years they’ve been fishing or boating…it happens. Parts sometimes break. It could be a part issue, and sometimes it’s operator error. In kayak fishing particularly, you do not want to be out there, especially in tidal waters, without access to easy replacement parts. A busted prop can mean a free ride down the tide and some serious issues getting back to your launch. It can also mean the end of a fishing day that might have just started. Say for example you launch under the cover of darkness, ready for an awesome day of bass fishing, but you slam into a stump and bust your prop. Or you’re distracted, the tide is low on your hunt for pre-dawn topwater stripers, and you run into a rock and break the latch on your PDL Drive. Thankfully, the latch is designed to blow out before your prop does, but this is still not ideal. You might be burdened with the stress of wondering where you get one particular part for your kayak model. That’s where these kits come in.

Rather than have you worry about acquiring single replacement parts, Black Hall Outfitters sells complete Old Town Sportsman parts kits. What’s in each Parts Kit will vary based on the model of your kayak, but you can expect to find the following: replacement prop with hardware, kill switch, scupper plugs, drain plugs, rear skid plates, paddle strap and clip, lock knob and hardware for PDL drives, and seat shuttles. Each part is very easy to swap out yourself. For example, taking off a broken lock knob and installing a new one only takes about 3 minutes, and you won’t need any additional tools other than the provided Allen wrench. Truly, these are must-have kits. One key saying to remember when it comes to safety gear and replacement parts is: It is always better to have and not need than need and not have. These parts might sit in your hull for a couple months, but when something happens on the water, you will be more than just a little bit happy that you have them available.
