October 5th- Winds of Change for the Weekend

The unsettled weather is gone and in tis wake we are already seeing much improved fishing from the last 5 days. False albacore have shown back up in force around Mystic since Thursday evening. While just out of casting range from shore, kayak and boat anglers will enjoy a short trip to get on fish. As of Friday evening the fish were still seen blowing up but with yesterdays weather, the reports were sparse.

BIG striped bass are all over our stretch of the sound right now. While the bunker schools thinned out a bit, its been automatic when you snag and drop a bait near the balls of bunker. Can’t find bunker? No problem. Practically every rock pile and reef from Clinton to Old Saybrook is holding fish from 30″-40″ and they are eager to bite. Mojos are responsible for many of the catches, so be sure you have some 4/8 and 10/6 tandems as the fish are fairly shallow (<30′). Block and Montauk are fishing fantastic with daytime blitzes on shore at “the end” and an excellent dusk bite at dusk and dawn. BHO customer Steve Cafaletti recently fooled this bass near at Block.

Seabass have continued to impress this season and the fish have shallowed up allowing jig fisherman to get back in the action. The best reports are coming from SW Reef and fish are being caught mostly on clams and jigs. The accidental blackfish has been reported on most trips now too, which bodes well for our October 10th opener. Speaking of tog…
